Well, I'm finally retired! And, I am looking for work! I want to work as a cashier on Friday, Saturday and Monday. Can't work Thanksgiving Day, Christmas Day or Sundays. Thought I would have a problem finding work. I applied at Loews, Home Depot and Hobby Lobby.

Got interviews at all 3.

I haven't been to an interview for 31 years! Any suggestions? My resume is worthless since my prior job had nothing to do with merchandising. I ran computers.

Any suggestions would be appreciated.

Even if your prior job was in a different field, emphasize the skills that transfer to any job. For anyone who did a good job working with computers, I would say you must be great at paying attention to detail, focusing on a task, troubleshooting, a fast/good learner. If you google "transferable skills" you will find lists and that might help you brainstorm what you may want to be sure to point out during your interview.

Good luck.

I think you should have put this in the Retirement forum!
Anyway, Lowe's, Home Depot and Hobby Lobby aren't open on Thanksgiving or Christmas, but definitely open on Sundays.
I went into SS/Early Retirement this year due to being unemployed and have been looking for a part-time job as well. My working requirement are even more strict than yours are, but I keep looking. One of the problems I have is "physical limitations" due to two surgeries. The jobs I've been looking at have absolutely nothing to do with what with what I've done in the past, but "oh well" I have to say.
Good luck to you! Oh, btw, I'm 62.

Default Thanks

I reworked my resume. I hadn't stop to think that my experience working with our customers and coworkers could be important as a cashier. Part of my job is helping customers with computer problems! I spend quite a bit of time each week working with them in person, thru computers and over the telephone.

I also bought a suit. I work in a place where most dress is casual. I am going to make the rounds this weekend just to see how cashiers dress. Something else I hadn't thought about.

Thanks for the help.

Hobby Lobby is closed on Sundays. The other 2 are open Sundays, but getting Sunday off shouldn't be an issue if you are willing to work every Saturday.

Having managed a "big box" home improvement store in the past I can assure you that your lack of cashier / customer service experience won't be a big issue. Many of the cashiers we hired were high school and college aged kids who were working for the first time. They are mostly looking for people who appear to have a good head on their shoulders and will shop up for work on a regular basis. If you have any cash-handling experience as a volunteer (treasurer of a church/service organization, working a concession stand, etc.) be sure to point that out.

Don't wear a suit to the interview, it may send the message that your expectations are a little high as to the salary you expect and the amount of physical work you are expected to do. Dress code for cashiers at most retailers is nice jeans and either a collared shirt with some type of company smock, or a company T-Shirt. I'd suggest "business casual" for the interview.

Default Duster1979

My first job (in 1969) was at Sears. I ran the candy counter. It was a hoot! Got totally sick of popcorn and candy, but learned a lot about merchandising from a superb manager.

The job I have now includes working daily with customers - in person, thru the computer and over the phone.

I will forget the suit. Just take a shower and dress neatly! Thanks for the advice.
