Everybody makes mistakes.
I have a feeling his manager won't be going to that much trouble to help him out. They might have even been looking for a reason to fire him and if that is the case, this would be the ticket.

When I was a cashier, I was once $14 short and even that was a big deal. It ended up being a mistake in the manager's counting, so it was okay. Being short on your drawer isn't usually taken lightly and if nothing is resolved, you will probably have to pay the $100.

Worst come to worst, you can demand to see the camera first before turning over the $100.

I haven't touch a cash register since college, but I remember you never let anyone go into the your register.

We had a key(it was in the 80s) and you took the key out when you weren't at the register. It was part of your routine like closing the drawer and always placing the money the customer gave you on the drawer, and counting out change so there was no issue with someone saying they gave you a $50 when they gave you a $20.

I think the OP had that issue as well.

I notice in the supermarket and stores that when they're doing a shift change, they stop ringing people up and the cash is verified.

The OP seems to have a problem with following protocol. They went on break and left their register unlocked(or didn't take the code off), well you can't do that when YOU'RE RESPONSIBLE for the contents.

Hate to tell you, but they have probable cause to fire you just for leaving your register unlocked because if it is under your code anything that happens under it is your responsibility. They will probably fire the person who took the $100 in addition to firing you.

When I was a cashier, we had our own code we signed on and off with. when we went on a break but left the till in the drawer, it was locked and you had to use your secret code to unlock it.

Are your regiseters such that anybody can get on a register or do you have your own secret code to unlock it?

Good question to the OP Bravesfan. Most modern stores have coded registers. Hopefully this is the case as cameras will likely not catch small things like this.

If it is an old-school register, it could have been anyone. I hope it works out for you OP.

I wouldn't speculate until you go into work. See what they tell you.

You better learn to be more careful with your cashier code, it sounds like.

My next shift is in 2 days and I have no idea what's going to happen. Am I going to get fired?? It's seriously not fair. I have never lost that amount of money... There's no proof it was my fault. Any other cashiers or former cashiers here know what could happen?
Missing cash happens for a variety of reasons, and when multiple cashiers use one till it makes figuring out who is responsible that much more difficult. The bolded part is what will really get you in trouble. I can guarantee you that is a big no-no anywhere you work. A lot of cash shortages I've looked into came from short change artists that fool cashiers into giving more change back than they should have. Unless you know about them and what they do you probably wouldn't recognize that it happened.

You need to log out, and NEVER let anyone touch your cash, or have your code.
