I'm sure every city and county has volunteers like that - people to give tours of historical sites, write grants, provide childcare at community events, etc. And it's been like that for hundreds of years. That type of work has almost always been done by volunteers, who want to help their community and get out and socialize a little.

I don't know where you got the idea that companies are directly benefitting? Usually volunteering is all about community.
