I graduated in 2009 from a small liberal arts school in new orleans with a degree in Finance.

Fast Forward to 2011, I am working at Nordstrom making 100% commission. I've recently relocated back to New Jersey and I live right next to NYC. My goal is a permanent position in a corporate office located in Manhattan. I've been focused on networking.

So far, I've networked my way to an adult mentoring program with Barclays Capital/Goldman Sachs and onto the Executive Board with a major non-profit organization (volunteering). STILL no permanent Finance job offer.

I'ved worked at Nordstrom since March 2011 and I don't like it at all but I know I have to do it for now.

I DID not plan on being in retail this long. BUT my finance work experience adds up to less than a year in numerous temporary jobs. From New Orleans, to Atlanta, to New Jersey.

Does anyone have any advice so I can get the HELL out of retail once and for all OR anyway to speed up this process. I'm desperate!

That is a tough one. Lots of degrees out there can't find work in their field, or even in their state. I took a job in a diff state in a diff career path than my major, its a job, not where I want to be, but it works for now.

Just keep doing what you have been doing (networking, volunteering, applying) and hopefully something will come up. But don't forget never to pass up a potential job opportunity that may not be what you are looking for right now, but may lead to something you want to do in the future.

BTW, I understand the whole get out of retail experience as I had worked in the industry for 8 + years, but the last thing you want to do is make yourself miserable over it.

The best of luck.

Ugh, I feel your pain. I'm also a college graduate stuck in retail. I'm very fortunate to have a job, but I just want more/better for myself. It's so frustrating because I feel like I'm stuck.

unfortunately i dont know of any school in LA that is going to give you a shot to work at Barclays/GS.

Those people want Ivy's, elite liberal art colleges, or top 10-15 schools.

In LA you have Tulane and LSU, that's it pretty much. Those are decent area schools if you want to stay in the region, but they dont travel for the most part.

the volunteering thing id keep up with that for now.

Just take an office job for the experience and a salary even if it not want you want to do permanently.
This way you can get out of retail. I have been down that road too.

Graduating in Finance, look at health plans in your area. They are always looking for acturials. This could be a great stepping stone.

Write to your congress and explain that American's cannot survive on a retail economy. I doubt they'll listen though, their job is pretty secure.
