I'm checking out an internship that looks really good. It's at a reputable company and it's paid. But it's also about 50 miles away, or an hour long commute. Now this would mostly be a reverse commute, that is to say that I wouldn't be going with the heavy traffic. But it's still a long commute.
Has anyone here done this? It'd only be for a few months. I like to think that I would be fine with it since it would be more due to distance rather than traffic.

An hour is quite normal, even on shorter commutes it can take an hour or more in areas with heavy traffic. I only drive 2.5 miles then take the bus but all together it's about an hour. Nice thing is I can relax and check news/e-mail on my android.

That's nothing. I've been doing a commute for 33 years that has varied between an hour and 20 and two hours, each way.
I have about an hour commute now. I have had them in the past as well. Not a big deal to me. And certainly not if it was only going to be a few months. It will also help that it is against traffic. For me there is a huge difference between an hour of light traffic and an hour of heavy traffic.
1hour for 2.5 years knew it was temporary, the only reason was to help the company out. Also had family near that area just in case of any weather issues.
Sure. I've done commutes that were close to 2 hours, from LI to Manhattan. Granted, I only did itfor 8 months, but it wasn't the actual commuting that got to me, it was having no time to detox from the day. There just weren't enough hours to make dinner, have downtime, spend time with the SO, etc.
You're in the D.C. area. An hour is par for course. If you're taking the Metro, it's easy.
I've done an hour commute for a short time. For a short time, it's doable. I really can't imagine doing it for an extended period. It's exhausting and leaves you with no time for a quality personal life. I'd suggest getting some good tunes or audio books to listen to in the car. Listening to news radio during the commute can make the trip more frazzled because you're just listening to the same ten-minute cycle of headlines, traffic, and weather.
(Yes in DC many people commute for even longer. But many of these people commute by train or commuter bus and it is easy to sleep on them, or get work done on their laptops so that they can leave by 4pm or earlier.)
I did it for a year when gas was 4.50 a gallon It was rough, about 600.00 a month on gas
