I am an industry Staff Accountant. I don't get bored when I have a project to do. I call it getting in the zone. I can zone out for as long as it takes to get the project done.
I DO get bored when I have absolutely nothing to do. Whenever my recons are done, entries are booked, budget analysis is finished, everything is filed, yada yada, and I have nothing to do, it is super boring and my day just drags....
I am constantly amazed at the number of workers in the cubical farm at my office who manage to just sit there all day staring in their computer and not say a word to anyone all day. Many of them rarely get up to go to the restroom and most of these workers bring a sack lunch with them and quickly eat lunch at their desk. Also, most of them are at their desk by 7 AM and don't leave until 6 PM at the earliest.
Most of these people are in Finance, Accounting, or some type of IT technical job.
Don't they get restless or bored just sitting at their desk staring at their screen all day and never getting up to walk around, or have a lunch out with friends to look forward to and break up the day.
They tell me they have so much work to do but even though they are busy doesn't human nature tell us most people would get restless or bored just sitting there all day never breaking up their day with conversation, etc?
Your post made me chuckle because that's exactly how I am some days. Some days I can go for a few hours and not talk to anyone in my finance office. I'm just plain busy as all get out some days. I have a desk job and sometimes I'm working on numerous spreadsheets at once among other things. My day goes by really quickly sometimes. I can get up to do whatever I want anytime...I feel sorry for anyone with a job like mine that has "assigned" times they are allowed to get up. I take little breaks sometimes to post on here, check the weather, check my personal email, etc. I have some people near me that love to yack on and off... if I'm in the mood I'll join in, if not, I ignore them.
Busy or not I still do not understand the ability of my coworkers to sit still for 10-12 hours a day staring into a computer screen and not get up to go to the restroom, take a break, or go to lunch. You would think they would just get restless.
It reminds me of a long airplane trip I took to Asia, many people never got out of their seats the whole 15 hours. I went crazy and got up every hour to walk around. Many went the whole time without even going to the bathroom!
About 80% of the time I can hear a pin drop in the office.
Yeah, the human mind and body are not meant to sit in a tiny cubicle staring at a computer screen for 8 hours a day, 5 days a week. You never hear about blue collar workers going nuts and shooting up their workplaces, do you? lol

Then maybe the two of you shouldn't work in an office. Not everyone is cut out for it.

If they're not moving all day, and you're sitting at your desk to witness that, then you're not moving all day. So, why don't you move all day?
You can work in an office and not be stuck in a cubicle all day. My office day involves running from conference room to conference room.
I agree completely. I am simply saying that there are specific types of jobs that require heads down concentration on details all day, and not everyone is up for it. Personally? I am not cut out for a job where I am talking to people day in an day out. I would be a terrible person to work in sales, for example. My natural personality is such that I can focus on minute details for hours at a time. This isn't a good or bad thing, it is simply that certain people are better suited for different types of work.
