I am constantly amazed at the number of workers in the cubical farm at my office who manage to just sit there all day staring in their computer and not say a word to anyone all day. Many of them rarely get up to go to the restroom and most of these workers bring a sack lunch with them and quickly eat lunch at their desk. Also, most of them are at their desk by 7 AM and don't leave until 6 PM at the earliest.

Most of these people are in Finance, Accounting, or some type of IT technical job.

Don't they get restless or bored just sitting at their desk staring at their screen all day and never getting up to walk around, or have a lunch out with friends to look forward to and break up the day.

They tell me they have so much work to do but even though they are busy doesn't human nature tell us most people would get restless or bored just sitting there all day never breaking up their day with conversation, etc?

I work in Accounting and I sometimes do this. I get really focused on a project that nothing else matters. Now I have my own office, it's a bit small but it helps decrease the distractions.
I don't mind not having much co worker interaction at time but if it was like that every day, I would go a little crazy. I do have an introverted personality but someone who is more extroverted would not find it so great.

I used to do this kind of work and I was bored out of my mind. I didn't mind not talking to people because I'm painfully shy and had really nothing in common with my boring coworkers, but at the same time, I felt really lonely and left out. I definitely had to get up often to get water and then go to the bathroom. I have varicose veins and poor circulation in my legs. I can't just sit there for long periods. Well, my female supervisors were such micromanagers who worried more about face time than whether the work was getting done, so they'd give me hell about every little minute I was out of my seat. It was so dehumanizing. I was tempted to buy a manequin version of myself to occupy the seat whenever I got restless. Perhaps I should've gotten into nursing or something else where I could walk around and not be stuck in one spot doing the same monotonous **** all day long day in day out.

I take 5 minute mental breaks throughout the day, both online (city-data?) and talking to co-workers, but overall no, I don't get bored. I get engrossed in what I do. There are times I look up and three or four hours have gone by without me realizing it. In college I would get to the library on a saturday morning and study straight through for 7-8 hours with no breaks, simply because it was more efficient than any other way of studying. I would only be bored if the work itself is boring, but my work is very challenging mentally (to me at least). If I were just sitting at a desk entering numbers in a spreadsheet all day, I would be bored out of my mind. That being said, I spend my time solving problems, writing algorithms, and coming up with better and more efficient ways for things to run.

Maybe it is just a personality thing, but I think a lot of people have very short attention spans. I see people in my office who seem to have to talk to someone else every 40 minutes, all day long and then complain about how stressed out they are. Maybe their work would be manageable if they were working instead of talking all the time!

Maybe they are surfing the web. I work in an office and it sometimes drives me nuts when people want to be too chatty!

Some are probably surfing on porn sites. I had a coworker on my last job who did that on occasion. He was eventually fired. Others are paying the bills or on Facebook. Who cares what they're doing...?As long as they don't interfere with what I'm doing, I don't care.

If you enjoy your job, you'll probably do it on your breaks as well without getting bored.

About 80% of the time I can hear a pin drop in the office.

Yeah, the human mind and body are not meant to sit in a tiny cubicle staring at a computer screen for 8 hours a day, 5 days a week. You never hear about blue collar workers going nuts and shooting up their workplaces, do you? lol

Pretty much this. Op what do you think those cubiclones do all day? It's probably more than just looking at a blank desktop. I spend my time figuring stuff out and solving problems; the same stuff I used to do for free in my spare time-getting paid is just a nice bonus haha. I guess it helps that I have alot of autonomy as an individual contributor.
