There is this one kind of effeminate guy who works with us. He's a nice enough guy, but I'm pretty sure he's gay because he talks and acts like it.

I ignore him (just like most everyone else I work with), but some of the others laugh about him behind his back and call him things like "fairy," "***," etc. I haven't heard them say it to his face, but they make fun of him behind his back all the time.

Does this kind of thing go on in your workplace if there is a suspected gay person?

That type of behavior happens to any1 who does not fit the standards of the clique. It's similar to High School. You have the nerds, jocks, rich kids, goth, etc. At a workplace, you have the same thing in an "adult" setting.

Disgusting. We have a guy at my job who people assume is gay. I have since become friends with him, and guess what? It dosen't even matter to me. He is a great guy and I am glad we are friends. Anytime the others have something to say about him, I ask if they even know him. People like that are rude & disrespectul. And it is agasint HR policy to do this.
The fact that you say you ignore him is perplexing. Why are you ignoring him? Are you afraid you are going to catch the gay?

Not in my work place, thank God! They will be fired because they are causing a hostile environment.

In my work place, you can be fired for criticizing other people clothes or look. They have zero tolerance for childish behavior. As adult everybody needs to be respectful of everybody, no matter how others looks or acts.

Any time you get a collection of humans together the ones that don't fit the norm are going to get made fun of by some.

I’d have to question your workplace decorum if you’re thinking of having a laugh at someone else’s expense. This is the quickest way to fired or even sued

People make fun of gay guys everywhere. In fact people make fun of most anybody "not like them" all over. Most everybody denies it. Some people bury their head in the sand and act like it doesn't happen...

But it does.

I'm not saying it is right to make fun of anybody... but it's a fact that it's out there.
