Securing employment in a different state (applying, degree, finance, positions)

I'm currently employed in Oklahoma City, but looking to move to a different state. How would you (or how did you?) go about applying for out-of-state jobs? I have a few friends I'm planning on visiting in Santa Clara, CA for a possible move afterwards, but nothing is set in stone, except for my desire to get out of this state.
I have a degree in Finance (graduated three years ago), and will be looking for Financial Analyst positions.
If anyone could also recommend a "good" state for this types of positions, I would appreciate it as well.
