Nah. The last 2 places I worked for didn't have break rooms so I'm pretty used to it. We've actually been sitting in the machine shop with one of the portable DVD players we snatch off whatever plane is in service that day so it's not too bad. It's just that the boss-man doesn't get the concept of 'lunch' or 'break' so he asks us to do stuff constantly when we're obviously on break.
And you can't turn the boss down, it will show up on your performance reviews as being 'uncooperative'

The only thing worse about the break room than all the things everyone stated above is when your coworkers microwave something vile and you have to sit and smell it while you are eating (fish/burnt popcorn/exotic foreign cuisine (?)

You can turn the boss down it is legally called "break time" and it IS the law. Perhaps the boss should brush up on what is legally required during a shift for employees as far as breaks go.

I was thinking the same thing. I know companies like to screw with your breaks and often get away with it but lunch time??
You guys should stand up for yourselves. This sort of behavior will not get better with time. Everyone needs a bit of a break to be a better worker.

It may be the law in your state, but it is not the law in every state, and it is not federal law.

I wish people would think long and hard before they have kids and get married. They bring this crap to work and act like I'm the one with issues because I don't want to hear it.
Get out of the break room with that.
No, this is not an attack on women, its just always happens to be women that do most of the complaining about this stuff.

My office's breakroom is like Calcutta at rush hour during lunch: Full of Indians jabbering in various Indian languages and microwaving food that ranges from deliciously but strongly fragrant to out-and-out disgusting. The smell is overwhelming; not always bad, but always extremely strong.
I deal with it by avoiding the break room at that hour. No biggie.

The last time people 'stood up for themselves' the entire department was fired. It's actually happened a few times, twice in the past 4 years. Not with our dept., but with others. Now with 3 of the guys' wives expecting children in the next 6 months nobody wants to do anything that would jeopardize their jobs. Plus, airport jobs are kind of hard to come by and it's been like this in my industry for a really long time so we just go with the punches.
The owner knows exactly what he's doing, and he's very open about taking advantage of us. I've been looking for a new job for well over a year...so far, nothing.
