TVSG ... Each year, HR folks are coming up with new strategies to effectively screen out job candidates with the flood of unemployed out there looking for work. You cannot use 2009 interviewing strategies to effectively prepare your unemployed clients on how to navigate the intimidating interview process. A career advisor/job specialist MUST always keep their info fresh if they wish to be truly effective in serving clients ... Unless you are looking for work in another field. One of the biggest concern companies have in hiring the unemployed is whether their skills and field-specific knowledge is outdated ... You have to keep yourself up to date by constantly reading the latest books, articles and journals about the field of career advising.

This interviewing tip will never be outdated and it has worked for me constantly

"Let the Interviewer do MOST of the talking"

Yes, your interviewing skills have really been great since you learned them all in 2009. Laid off, what, three times since then? For all the bluff, bluster, BS and self-professed knowledge, at 36 years old you've not once reached management level.

And that's true of all fields. Nobody in any arena can afford to sit back on their laurels thinking they know everything there is to know. That's so basic it shouldn't even have to be mentioned to anyone. Well obviously there are exceptions ...

In my field, that tip does not fly. Depends upon the industry. The panel has a set of questions in which they rarely deviate from their script and each question has to be answered thoroughly yet concisely by each interviewee. If I just offered a bare minimum answer so that I can "let the interviewer do most of the talking" then I would not reach the second phase of the interview process because my answers would lack breath.

In your particular case a very wise strategy. That it's worked for you is another matter altogether.

That's what I was talking about in my answer. If TVSG wanted to be effective as a career advisor/job specialist, he needs to be aware of strategies used by HR folks in multiple fields, not just the area that HE is specially interviewing for.

He's stuck in a rut of mammoth proportions. Unfortunately the non profits for whom he's been working for years as a job counselor for the disadvantaged is losing funding hand over fist all over the country. With his lack of experience in the corporate world, it won't be long before he finds out how truly limited he is. At that point even a fast food job will be tempting.

And I guess I used the wrong word, I meant to say it was CONFIRMED why It's always good to have a job. I just hope I don't have to replace anything else in 2012.
