I'm currently teaching at a private school in Washington, DC. The salary is decent, but the cost of living in DC is so high that buying a home anywhere near school is prohibitive.

As a result, I'm looking for jobs in more affordable cities, such as Minneapolis, Chicago, Pittsburgh, and Cleveland. Salaries there, of course, tend to be much lower, and as a result, I wouldn't be able to improve my standard of living significantly.

Does anyone know of any cities that might hit that sweet spot, where the reduction in cost of living is significantly more than the reduction in teachers' salaries? I'm most interested in the Midwest, but open to the Northeast and Northwest as well. Thanks for any suggestions!
