This is a really interesting thread, thanks for all the great posts. I have worked over the internet off and on for the past 10 years. I did medical transcription, voicemail transcription, was a text chat operator, and telemarketer-which did not last long, lol, or I didn't anyways. I am now trying to get back into something that I can do parttime from home to add to my fulltime B&M job to help pay for health insurance for me and my kids. I want to get into blogging also, wouldn't mind writing articles, and find some niches that I can make work for me.

You weren't asking me, but I'm also a blogger (mostly parenting, health, travel topics), and yes, it pays some bills. I work 12 or 15-ish hours per week and make a more than I would at a 40-hour-per-week minimum wage job, if that helps. YMMV, though... I know some bloggers who write for $5 or $10 per blog post, which, unless they're writing quite prolifically, is not going to pay too many bills.

Yes. I have managed to do very well blogging from home. It does take time to build up business, but for me it has been well worth it.

I do make sure that the posts are search engine optimized (helping Google and other search engines find the blogs) and also readable by humans who speak English. I do realize that I have the potential to make more money on my own sites, but I like knowing for sure that I'll get paid a certain amount on Friday, and not having the worries that go along with "passive" income.

In regards to generating other sources of online income, I created a PR blog a few years ago, and based on the traffic it generated I received emails from companies like "GoDaddy" inquiring about my advertising rates. There is a website called "Alexa" which tracks and monitors online traffic, and it is used frequently by large companies that are looking for high traffic blogs as new advertising sources.

As other posters have mentioned, blogging does require a lot of dedication and work -- but I truly enjoy it

I'm a Software Engineer and have the option to work from home. Usually I come to the office because it's easier to be around everyone I work with, but it's nice to have the option to work from home when I want to.

I own a business and work from home most of the time when I'm not meeting with customers. Two of my partners run the administration and production departments at the work site. The other also works from home most of the time.

I'm in IT sales, we are allowed to work from home when we reach certain sales benchmarks to be earned as a "privilege". I'm actually much more efficient and get a lot more done from home. I even tend to work longer since I don't have to commute when I work from home (obviously) and don't mind putting more time in.

I don't write for sites that you could sign up for; I write for private clients/small businesses. People hire me either because they've found my website, or because I've applied to an ad (Craigslist, ProBlogger, FreelanceWritingGigs, etc), or because they know someone who knows me... that sort of thing. I also have gotten some private clients through LinkedIn, and one magazine contacted me to write for them because I was a writer for a well-known site. It can be difficult to get your foot in the door, but once you do, the opportunities start appearing.

IT DBA contracted to cover support operations in India & China from my home in VA. Had an office in the server bldg locally but found it worthless since most of my support happened overnight. China & India are 10-12 hours ahead so their day shift is night here. I've always been a night person, so perfect fit. I have my play computer and I have two separate computers for them. Primarily use cable for connection, cut also have 4G hotspot for backup. If I need to travel I use an iPad.

I have gotten my blog opportunities from individual requests and client referrals. In order to get started, you will probably have to create some online articles or postings, that can be found through an online search.

In addition, you should also create a website or blog that features a portfolio of your work. Based on my experience, someone that wants to hire a blogger will want to see some writing samples.

TIP: Try to create blog postings or articles that relate to hot topics (i.e., entertainment, sports, etc.) or current events (unemployment, economy, etc.). Once you create a site, add the web link to your email signature page, this is a cost effective way to advertise
