So I had a final round interview that went great yesterday. Today I received an email which they told me following:

That everyone thought I was fantastic and were really impressed. That I am their leading candidate but they cannot finalize their decision or make an offer until they do one final interview for the other candidate on Friday. On Friday they will let me know after they interview that person. They also then asked me if I was planning on accepting any other opportunities between now and Friday when they make their choice.

So basically, are they telling me that unless this other candidate does just as good or better in the interview, I will probably be getting the job?

I know nothing is certain, but I found this to be a very interesting email. Kind of like saying "We want to hire you but first we just got to take care of this so please hold on". Any thoughts? Or does this happen all the time? I just would think that if I am neck in neck with the other candidate or behind they wouldn't reach out to me like this.

No, it doesn't mean that at all. The fact is that it is still up in the air between you and the other candidate. I do not believe you have any sort of advantage and, even if what they wrote to you was sincere and genuine, it really doesn't mean anything. If they feel the other candidate is the best fit for the position, they will go with that person. Also, I believe you are still "interviewing" for the position when they ask if you plan on accepting other opportunities. Obviously, they want you to respond that you are enthusiastic, it is your first choice, you would love to work for them, etc. If you appear less than enthusiastic, then the position might very well go with the other finalist.

Thanks for your insight, while I disagree with certain points some of your points make perfect sense. Neither you or I can really know what they meant with this email but curious to see if anyone has had a similar experience and what the results were. Anyone else have any insight?

I think OP has a strong chance

Most employers blow you off and you get nothing,... or you get the rejection letter.

OP got a real communication and the fact they asked OP if he/she had any other prospects, sounds better than the generic canned letter of denial....

It doesn't mean you're the final candidate, because if it did you would have the job. It means it's down to you and one other person, so your chances are 50/50(which is a good thing).

It's none of their business if you have any other offers. I would just say "no I don't have any other offers".

Seems like that do you have any other offers can be taken two ways

It could mean they want the person and hope he/she says no

OR
Or they was hoping that he.she had other offers so they would have a reason to hire the other person

only time well tell

Sometimes they also want to make sure that they don't lose the candidate to someone else. It's hard to say. One thing is for certain though, I am still in the running, but on Friday I will truly find out.

Well atleast you made the last round. I didn't get past the 1st round-lol But I still would rather be cancelled out in round 1 instead of round 3 because the first round didn't involve any effort since I was home and on the phone for 15 -20 mins. Hope you get it

I would never say that to an applicant, and risk getting someone's hopes up, when the other person may end up being selected. Better to say "one of the top candidates." At least they kept you updated. Good luck.
