I have been at my current job for 5 years. It has pretty much made me miserable since day one. (although I AM very thankful to have a job at all). I have been staying for the pay which is VERY good for this area.
I am burnt out and saw an opening for a job that it seems would challenge me and give me more satisfaction so I sent in a resume. I got through the first round of interviews only to find out that this job would be a $4.75/ per hour pay CUT for me. I could pay my bills but I would have to tighten the belt.
What would you do? Please share experiences that you may have of giving up pay for job satisfaction. Do you regret it? Did you wish you would have left sooner?
To me, it would depend on how much the cut would affect my life. If I couldn't pay for the roof over my head, no. If it meant less eating out or something, absolutely, do it.
I did this once and took a job with a huge cut, knowing I had to pick up hours at my former job to make life work out at all. It was getting old fast, but then the "good" job didn't work out (no warning) so that was that.
I think five years is a good solid background, and unless you'd have to really really deteriorate your lifestyle to take the new job, take it. After all, the pay will go up with time and experience. It all depends on what "tighten the belt" means to you. Please keep us posted? Best wishes.
I agree with Bright DL above me. Is there any way you could pick up a very part time job somewhere to help pay the bills, until your pay scale came up? One of my previous co workers moonlighted (moonlit?) at an office cleaning job, 2 nites a week to help the income.
What % of a pay-cut is it? $15 down to $10.25 is going to be a lot different than, say, $30 to $26.25.
My thoughts are that it doesn't sound like a good idea. The job might look better, but as brightdoglover touched on there's no guarantee the new job will be what you imagine. Perhaps hold out for another job that looks good and pays just as well.
I am doing the same and starting a new job on Monday. I understand where you are coming from. Sometimes the money just doesn't matter up to a certain point. I am going from $35k a year and bored with no advancement to $14/hour and hated that job with no advancement and now to $11.60/hr with plenty of advancement opportunities to go higher than $35k/year in about 5 years.
The way I see it is that you would always feeling the regret and if the new job doesn't pan out, you can always start looking for something higher paying.
