The reason I started smoking, was because I was working in a restaurant, and the only way to get a break AT ALL was to be a smoker. No matter the fact that I was 15, and working more hours than legally allowed, at the time. I should have been given a break anyways.
I worked at a restaurant. The first day I started, I turned around, the rest of the small staff is GONE. No one to train me or help out. The other three are standing outside smoking.
Most people in food service smoke. I wonder if anyone thinks of that when chowing down on their food, be it at McDonalds or Chez Whatever.

As far as "why not just get up and go out as often as teh smokers", well non-smokers can't get away with that here.
.
Who WANTS to stand around people smoking? As a non smoker I'd rather sit at my desk and work than stand around with a bunch of people puffing away.
As a quick story--my husband worked at a place where the head secretary was HATED for being a b***h. She was the kind of person who not only smoked every few minutes outside, she would spend her day online looking for rich men to marry or chatting to her daughter.
But if you had to go somewhere on time or if you were not at your desk and she needed you she would cause a big stink. You know, the office pain in the butt who thinks she is better than others because she works for the boss. The one who throws a hissy if paperwork is late but she's been goofing off all day till 4 pm?
Everyone at the company decided every time she went out for her unauthorized cigarette break they would take turns locking her out. This went on for a long time. The office rules were no extra breaks.
That woman was pretty angry. So was the boss who kept wondering why she had to walk around the WHOLE building to go back inside the one other entrance.
Maybe if she would have been nicer this wouldn't have happened.
The topic is fairness, is it not? I think that in fairness to the smokers, you should be angry with the administration who allows the "extra breaks" to continue. In my experience, people will continue to get away with as much as they can.
Companies should have exercise breaks, smokers can go smoke if they want but perhaps they can make some incentive for taking part in the exercises (health coverage, etc?).

Our company sent a memo stating the rules.
It lasted 20 minutes before it was broke and the higher ups just basically shrugged and said "oh well, we tried".

In the case I stated the woman thought she was awesomeness because she worked for the head boss, who we think was blackmailing him. Seriously. She got away with things no one else did. And no they did not have a relationship because she was OLD, really old, compared to him.
So the staff began to get her in trouble by locking her out, making it plain she was not following the rules. Eventually I think she got in trouble.
The best advice I ever received was not to worry about what other people are doing or not doing and focus on what you are doing. You won't get ahead worrying about others.
We have smokers here who go out 2-3 times every hour. It makes me angry, yes. Whay should they get special treatment? We get a 30 minute lunch break and 2 15 minute breaks. If non-smokers are only allowed to have breaks at that time, then smokers should be no different.

Worst part is, as an example - morning break is at 10am. Smoker goes out at 9:45 for 10 minutes to smoke. Comes back in, then takes their break 5 minutes later. Fair? Heck no.
Thats a good example of someone abusing their ability to take breaks. Bottom line is, if smokers get to go out as often as they like, the same should go for nonsmokers.

Why would they? What difference does it make?
