My husband has been looking to switch careers from the mental health field and looking for a new job for a few years now. He is thinking of going into the technical field.
What are some good certifications to get that will help make him more employable? Oracle, SAP, any others?
Certs alone won't really get you in the door like they used to infact many of the better certs require industry experience and then you have to rectify.
So there are a lot of certifications that are in demand but it's useless for us to rattle them off unless we know a few things such as:
Current IT experience?
Focus? Writing programs? Help Desk support? Networking? Security? Does he enjoy people?
How willing is he dedicated to go back to school and/or do training with his own time and money to get experience for certs?
$$$ available to spend?
He has some IT related experience from college, as he did work study in the telecommunications office. That was about six years ago though. None since then. He's hesitant to get a full comp sci degree because we'd have to take loans out and then might not be able to find a job.
His job is very people oriented right now since he works with mentally ill people, but he wants moreso of a desk job that involved limited people interaction.
lol, yeah. You don't need a comp sci degree. If you have skills and the motivation you can easily talk yourself out of the requirement with the interviewer. At the end of the day, the employer is just looking for someone who gets the job done and provides good value for their money.
I would learn programming stuff, ALL of it can be self-taught and to sell yourself all you have to do is make a top notch profile to show to employers.

Tell him to use that knowledge and seek out managed care companies such as UnitedHealth Group, Molina and Amerigroup...he could use his knowledge to get in the door there and then find a more technical path from there...
My husband made a damn good choice going in to this. It's a bit under the radar for people not in the field. It's been very good to our family. He has no degree, either.
What are his interests? Desktop support? Networking? Security? Project management/BA? That's the big question. Saying you want to get into IT is like saying you want to get in the car industry, we need specifics
GIS (Geographic Information Systems). Lots of demand, surprisingly few people are really knowledgeable in that area.
