At what age did you realize you are not going to get to be what you wanted to be when you grow up? whether because of the economy or not the right connections?
(I don't mean like being a movie star or rock star)
I honestly didn't really have a desire to be anything. And here I am now and I still don't really give a crap. :P Work is work and the less I can do the better.
I didn't know I couldn't be whatever I wanted. I was 24 when I realized I had to stop making excuses and start really doing whatever I had to in order to accomplish my goals though. Since then I have worked harder than ever and have actually started to get where I want in live.
Believe it or not, I always wanted to be a truck driver, and that's just what I am.
While everybody else in my high school class wanted to be in IT (males) or a nurse (females), I always had blue collar dreams.
I'm not trying to sound arrogant, but I am making more money than most of them will even after graduating, if they ever do.
By the way, I thought a bachelors degree was supposed to be 4 years. Why does it take people 8 years to get a bachelors degree these days? I'm just curious, not trying to sound like an ***hole.
I often felt jealous of people who knew what they wanted to be when they grew up or had parents who owned a business but like being Lash Larue, Superman or Pinky Lee I got over it. The Army and Policework were the two things where I had any aptitude and I retired from both of them. I couldn't imagine doing anything else

Age 19, When I found myself on my own quickly having to pay rent and for college. Worked 2 jobs also. I actually wanted to be a teacher back then. I found myself always having to work to keep a roof over my head. Funny part is due to a skyrocketing rent situation I found myself displaced and having to live in a rundown motel for a week. Between everything I could not go beyond 2 years in college I wound up in retail, And then the hotel business where I am now. It actually is a good job and interesting as well esp being in NYC. Had some real hard years though.

Who takes 8 years to get a bachelors degree? Most of my friends did a 3/2 program, and graduated in five years with a bachelors and master's degree.
Between 21 and 22, when I found out I have an illness that will always hand cuff me, and when I found out my degree is not remotely as employable as it was pimped to be, and I ended up taking a temp job for $10 an hour when I graduated college, and never received that "50k offer" I was supposed to get (hell, I STILL havent had a 50k offer, 8 years later).
I learned at around 22-23, it was going to be extremely difficult to reach my dreams. No one reaches their dreams without some kind of support somewhere. However, I kept plugging along.
When I reached 30, I realized it probably just wasn't going to happen...which, sucks.
