Naturally you reinstate him to his job and reimburse him for any time and pay lost. Then you fire or demote whoever made the decision to fire him in the first place.
He did absolutely the right thing in getitng a gun away from children or thugs who could find it. Even for Detroit which is known for being challenged in all areas, even for them this is just stupid.

a hardowrking man fired for doing the right thing! Its like a salem witch hunt sometimes where a man or woman will get in trouble for any viable excuse, no matter how big or small or how good his integrity is-and integrity, honesty and simply doing the right thing seems to be out the window nowadays. How screwed up that a persons livlihood gets stomped on at a moments notice like this. I hope he legally tears them a new one for this!

All the plausible reasons to cheat this guy out of his retirement were already taken.
