I am in a situation I've never faced before, so would like to hear opinions on it.

I've been in my current position for a long time, and due to various reasons, its not an option to look for a job elsewhere. If that were an option at all, I would definitely be doing it. So, I've accepted the fact that for the foreseeable future, I will be working where I do, doing what I do.

For the most part, I like many of my co-workers, I like my career, and due to the length of time I've been there, I have great benefits such as lots of PTO and flexibility (work at home, etc).

Anyway, what I would really like to do is have a chance to switch up some of my tasks/responsibilities. For example, I currently do tasks A, B, C, D, and E. I would like to continue to do all of them, but do less of A and B, and then get a chance do to F and G.

The main reason is that I am getting really burned out on tasks A and B because I've been doing them for so long.

My company merged into a larger one a while back and at my old company, it would have been no big deal for me to ask to do this- most likely, they would say sure. This new place is much more rigid in terms of departments, hierarchies, etc. The other problem is this new company doesn't seem to provide people with many chances to develop or progress in their career.

That being said, can you seen any downsides to making the request?

I don't want to give up any tasks, just maybe reduce the quantity of a couple of them (and there are others who these tasks, so its not like I am the only one who does them, also summer is a slow season for us), and then get a chance to learn in some other areas.

Of course, I would not tell my boss that the reason I want to do this is because I am totally burned out on the two tasks I want to reduce time on.

I guess I am just wondering if making such a request could in any way cause me any problems.
