A little background..I got laid off in 2010, then finally found work the end of 2011, that job I knew was temporary until I found something better paying with better hours, I was there 4 months. Well, I thought I found the better job, so I quit and took it; they let me go almost at the end of my 90 days, they also let 2 other veterans go. So this totally messed up my resume, leaving one job for another and being let go (it was phone sales and my #'s weren't enough, even though the whole time they said I was doing fine and still training). So now I leave it all off of my resume, which leaves a big gap. I now have a part time retail job (my background is retail management), it's only been a little over a month. Should I put this on my resume? Or will the much lower position hurt it? I'm worried that the first line will say "sales associate" and they won't look to the 2nd line which says "store manager". Arrr, I feel so screwed... Any helpful ideas are much appreciated.

Two things to try --

1. On top of the resume, include a paragraph introducing yourself as an experienced manager, highlighting a few key points to showcase your ability.

2. If you list your work history chronologically, the first item is your current part time job. Write "Part Time" where you usually place the job title and keep details brief (this can later be verbally explained as an assoicate level in the interview when you get to that point), so when the reviewers read the resume, their eyes naturally glide through that and land on the more impressive "manager" section. Be sure to go much lengthier here to call out your skills and achievements.

Voila!

You don't have do that with a lot of detail but yes mention the pt and temp jobs.

"Among the other things done since being laid off in 2010 was __fill in the blank__; __fill in the blank__; and a short term job with the XYZ Company where I was able to __fill in the blank__"

Yes, you should put the job there, but focus on what is relevant to your skills and future goals. Obviously, one has to tell the truth regarding work location and length of employment, but you don't have to go into a lot of detail about the non-manager period of work there.

Even a part time job helps fill in the "white space" on the resume - time periods where you're out of work - and can help get past the dreaded "no unemployed need apply" nonsense.
