When it comes to networking, I get it (intellectually.) I understand that most businesses prefer to hire someone they know or has a great reputation before posting ads online. If I were in the employer's shoes, I'd probably do the same.

However, my only attempts at networking has been to reach out to immediate family and friends, many of whom do not work in my industry. Although my network is pretty small (I'm very introverted), I just feel that I've already tapped out most of my immediate family and friends and need to expand.

When it comes to Networking in practice, I don't seem to "get it" (yet). I understand that there's no straightforward, one-size-fits-all approach to networking but I'm mainly looking for ideas that could potentially expand my network. Some of what's been suggested is as follows:

1) Search on LinkedIn and network with people in your industry who are in your immediate connections' networks.

2) Attend MeetUp events geared toward you industry.

3) Attend conferences in your industry.

Any new ideas?

If I were a business I would not count on networked candidates. I believe in selecting the best from job applications, and not giving favoritism to someone because someone working for me knows them.

ragnarkar, how about we use you as a guinea pig? Just answer a few basic questions.

Where did you go to college?
Where you in a fraternity/sorority?
Were you in any clubs or other organizations?
What is your industry?
What is your current job function?
What is the next step up from where you are?
If you want to go in a completely different direction, what is that?
