In light of the many hundred thousands of new work visas being awarded to the foreigners that were illegally here, I think you're chances for getting a job are virtually nil. Don't bother. It's over.

I understand the feeling. I myself have been out of school for a long time and don't know where to even start.
BUT, you are lucky here in that you have steady income and can explore what you enjoy doing. You have the resources to figure out what you may want to pursue as a career without the stress of paying bills, showing up to work, no children and a supportive husband.

Thought of opening a business? Do you have any hobbies? I know this sounds stupid..but you really have to figure out your likes and dislikes. Figure out what you would do for free and make a career out of it.

Also, if you are into astrology, PM me your birth details. I'll take a look at your natal chart and suggest some routes that would be easy for you to go through.

She has a law degree and I don't think is competing with 16-30 year olds, mostly without a graduate degree.

The OP did not state that she would only take a job in a law firm. The OP wants a job of some kind, to be productive and is over 30 competing with a huge new batch of 30 and under for many kinds of jobs.

If I were in your shoes, I would do volunteer work in an area I really like. You will meet people and in time, someone would probably offer you a job in something you like or not, but it gets your foot in the door. You definitely have many options to choose from.

I know of a few people who have law degrees and never put them to use in their jobs, and it seems odd, but it happens more often than most of us think.

Since managing rental property is a job... maybe you can learn how to be a manager of your rental properties?

I'm not really looking at jobs with law firms--mostly because I know that my situation leaves me with absolutely no chance of finding something there.

I have done a bit of volunteering in the past but was mostly always just put in some room by myself to do filing, make copies, whatever and never really met anyone or felt all that useful through that, perhaps I could find somewhere that would be a bit more interactive. I would eventually like to move into a paid position just because you never know what the future holds: the rentals could stop generating income, I could get divorced or have my spouse pass away or whatever. None of those are on the horizon at the moment but I would just feel better going forward knowing that I had some skill-set/whatever to fall back on if I ever needed to.

On managing the rentals--they are clear across the country from where we live so it isn't really something I can take on at this point.

Loops--if nothing else, I'm curious so I'll send you PM.

I think you can explore other volunteer opportunites that don't simply involve sitting alone in a room and making copies. Lots of non-profits can really benefit from someone with a legal background, even if they haven't passed the bar exam and practiced.

I work in non-profit mental health/ human services, but a lot of other non-profit fields could benefit from your experience and input. Maybe apply to sit on a board of your local YWCA, legal aid society, charity group, or provider of disability services? Pick what you are interested in, and find a non-profit that is in that area: art, nature, animals, children, history, music, fitness, health, poverty, disability, elders, political action, education, etc, etc, etc.

Sitting on a board can also be a pretigious position, and you could end up meeting lots of people who might point you toward a career, or provide you with valuable contacts. Plus, you'll make friends and gain new skills. And even though you won't be earning money, you'll know you are doing something meaningful.
