I have filled out job applications online and had to give references, social security#, etc. If I worked in HR and you didn't fill out everything, I would throw it in the trash and move on to the next application. This is 2012, filling applications out online is the way it is going. I got the job online without ever meeting anyone and they gave me $12,000 to move as the job was in another state

I'm not really sure what the point of this thread is then. To rant?

Temp agencies are a different breed of cat altogether. When you sign up with a temp agency you are basically being "hired" by them even though they might not have a position for you immediately. So they will often contact your references up front, but it's a one-time thing and they won't contact them again if the first job they set you up with doesn't work out.

Some don't like it, I think it's just something you have to accept if you want to go the temp route.

That's kind of my point. Which is why I am saying to provide the references regardless.

I usually quit when they ask for my social , but doesn't matter because your application is going through software that will toss your application based on keywords

In a job market like this, giant companies like Comcast can be extremely selective (even for its contractors). The longer you stayed unemployed, you do get a little more desperate as you do hand out more information. I had to give references on some online applications. I recall the companies were fairly large like over 10K employees.

Now in 2012, it's the employers' market right now.

Regardless if it's a employer market, you still stick to what you want to do when job seeking

Agree. For me, I don't mind handing over references if asked, but I have rarely come across applications that have ever required it during the initial stages. I agree that employers should wait to collect that information from candidates who are seriously being considered for the job - not from every Joe who fills out an application online.

And I will not hand over my SSN through an online application. Again, I rarely see companies asking for that info online, but when I have, I cancelled the application and moved on. If you want my SSN, then I will gladly give it to you when we meet for an interview.

The funniest thing of the day was a community college in philly asking for a SSN and references on a online application while the IVY league school which was University of Penn didn't ask for neither-lol
