Hours Worked legalities
To save money, my company does not want to hire more people so they want us to work for 6 hours, go home for 3 or 4 hours, then come back and do two more hours to get 8. They do not want to us to get over 40 hours. It kills us on gas. Can they do this?

I think they can. I will say that really sucks and I'd start looking.

Another ploy to make the oil companies rich? I don't understand what the motivation to do a split shift this way could possibly be. They want to increase your commute expenses for a straight 40-hour week. That doesn't make sense! Yes, they probably can get away with it but you aren't going to know for sure unless you call your state's labor board. I'd start looking for another job pronto.

A lot of jobs are split shifts like that, especially in the shipping industry (Fed-Ex, UPS). I'd also suggest looking for a new job if you don't like it. Many people have actually applied for split shift jobs. but when they change it like that
I'd imagine it's hard to take. What is the benefit to them? Are you a business that operates more than 8-0 hours a day and they don't need as many so they are splitting it up so they always have enough people?

Yep, they can. It's called a split shift.

Most likely legal in 40 plus states. Why not get a cheap meal with some of the time, and go to a library near where you work..to avoid burning so much gas?
