IT and accounting...now that Obama care is in full swing so to speak-more regulation which means more financial jobs-I'm changing careers too...after a short stint going to school for healthcare ( the school lost it's accreditation after 2 weeks of me attending). I'm going to school for acounting.

Just remember...think of something you Want to do for the next twenty, thirty years..

Good luck and let us know what you decide.

I am not sure there is anything out there where there will always be work. The economy is so cyclical. A few years ago, I would have said nursing, but with everyone flooding the field, I don't think that is the case anymore. Right now, it seems the energy sector has jobs, but that could change in a few years. Robotics might be a good field as well.

A lot of it also depends on where you live as well. Different areas of the country have different job markets and demand for various careers. For example, there may be a demand for nurses in Montana or Alaska, but not so much in California. There is no demand whatsoever for construction workers in Arizona, but in North Dakota, there are jobs. If you are willing to move, there is a greater chance of finding decent employment with your career change.

The economy is dying, and there are no jobs that cannot be outsourced, insourced, or just eliminated.

So, with a bit of humor, here's the future:

1) Department of Corrections. In the end, the US will probably employ 1/3 of the people to keep an eye on the other 2/3's of the people once all the other jobs are gone.

2) Scams. These are always good. Look for bubbles, insider deals, and so on. When a nation no longer produces anything of value, bubbles are a great way to hide the collapse. See the Housing Bubble as an example.

3) Political BS'ing. These seems to be no shortage of this, and they are all paid very well, despite producing nothing.

4) Selling people on the next big thing. So, sure, there aren't enough jobs in healthcare for all the folks who went into it - that's not a problem if you got rich selling people on the idea that there would be healthcare jobs in the future. So, find some BS that you can make money on by pushing people to it, and away you go!

5) Part time, poverty wage jobs. The future of career growth in America, as admitted by the Department of Labor. Yeah for a "service sector" economy that produces nothing and doesn't pay well enough to sustain itself.

So, yeah... there's the future economic growth in America.

Drive a taxi in a college or wealthier part of town. I can only guess when slow times (if any) would be in a wealthier part of town. However, I can tell you to be prepared for summer time in a college town. Which is exactly what I've done. But also, I'm not too sure how long the colleges here (and most other places) will be able to help support the area. You've seen college loan news lately, right? Taxi driving isn't the safest job, so be careful where (you) decide to drive. That's all the info I'm giving up. The rest (as with anything) you'll have to learn on your own. In a total of four years driving I could fill three or four pages of tales here. From several different genres.

With the way things are headed though, who knows how or how long any business is going to survive.

The minute CPAs can get exported to India, accounting is done.
