Thanks for the head shaking, it helps. I've never seen this policy before and I read every bit of scrap put in front of me when I first begin a job. I had to search thoroughly just to find it. Not everyone is use to these type of policies. If I was, do you think I would have let this happen? I feel there was a severe lack of communication. The proof is in the large amount of employees who share my situation. Now they have several employees with a significant drop in their morale. Something I believe management need to manage.

How did you become aware that only 40 hours carry over to the next year? Sounds like you didn't have much information on the vacation policy from the beginning.
bingo !

" the law "........" the law "........." the law "

There is NO law that says companies must let you roll over annual vacation hours into the next year.

Where do you folks come up with all your legal ideas ?

Vacation hours can be 'capped'...use 'em or loose 'em.

Companies make up their own rules.
A lot of stuff is very hard to enforce legally, even if it is in writing.
Companies always have those clauses that they can change this or that due to circumstances, etc.

It's really silly to offer vacation time, aka PTO, and then say you have to take it that year.
It doesn't allow for the human factors of having kids, seeing relatives, taking trips when it's the best time, etc. It is making the employee do things on the company schedule.

.

Its logical to offfer use it or lose it, as it eliminates blips in available staffing levels.

Pffft...people take off so they have to staff to have coverage. They just don't want to plan a ways out.
Just more rigidity, more pendant.

Nothing rigid about letting folks carry over last years time for a full quarter. I wonder what other policies these employees failed to read.

Yes, dumb employees, yes, that's why the company has them on their payroll.
