Hey guys, my girlfriend has wanted a career in pharmaceutical sales. She graduated in May and has worked at Enterprise Rent-A-Car for the last 7 months because that is supposed to be a good starting point. She has been a very highly rated trainee & should become assistant manager in a couple months.
She got a call today for a job as an inside sales rep at Inventiv Health. We don't know a lot about 'inside' sales, supposedly its calling and video conferencing. Which job do you guys think would be more beneficial to her?

Thanks a lot.
she should try to find out what kind of leads/accounts she is supposed to be working. If it is cold calling it may suck. If it is follow up calls or highly targeted leads she could make some $$ and advance

Thanks that sounds good, I will relay that info to her. Any other opinions are appreciated.
Make sure she knows the industry she will be working in is a very high stress/long hours/volatile one. But it pays well. And if you work in sales, cold calls will at some point always be part of your job description. So if she's got a hangup about that, she should consider another field.

Thanks. Yeah she knows the hours are high. Enterprise isn't a bad stepping stone to getting used to high hours with the 7:15-6:30 M-F, and 7:15-12:30 S schedule.

First off pharmaceutical sales jobs are not the gold mine they once were. Least of all with a company like Inventiv Health. Plus the pharmaceutical industry is one of the most corrupt and deceitful sectors of the economy. So my next question is WHY does she really want a job in pharmaceutical sales. If it's all about the money for her than she should go for it. Assistant manager at Enterprise is not a bad gig. It's stable, good salary and good benefits. How much is she going to make as a pharmaceutical sales rep? Has she ever done cold calling before? IT SUCKS! Enterprise is a big company and judging by her work history so far she has good opportunity to move up the ladder. If she gets into upper management i.e. district and regional manager those positions can rival any entry level or even mid level pharmaceutical sales job. Years ago it was a no brainer to go into pharmaceutical sales and entry level positions could earn you 6 figures no problem. That is NOT the case nowadays especially with this economy.
Also all inside sales means is basically she'll be sitting inside instead of traveling outside of the office. But it doesn't mean she won't have to do cold calling or establish her own accounts. Also she'll probably be on part commission. Is that something she wants to deal with in this economy? I wouldn't. In the end it's always better in this economy to "stick with what you know".
Also what is the rush? Work history matters A LOT nowadays. One of the biggest things an employer looks at nowadays is how long you've been with a company or at a job. She could stick with Enterprise for a little while longer and in a few years if things are what she wants then go be a pharm rep.
Thanks for all the good feedback so far guys. She has always liked pharm sales so she does seem to have of a passion for it. She would also be open to other sales jobs (I will forward her he recommendation for SAAS Software Tech sales). For the type of hours you work in the industry, yes, a lot of it is about the money. After the interview I guess we will have a better idea if the pay is much better than she would get at Enterprise and if there is any security at all/ opportunity for success and growth, in the job.
You have to be a hot chick to be a pharm. rep. That's the reality...
