Why are there so many lousy poorly written resumes? (credit, percentage, application)

The Internet is full of advice on how to write a resume and the library and bookstores are full of hundreds of books on how to write a resume. There are tons of templates you can use on the Internet too. Then why is there so many terrible resumes showing up in businesses across America every day?
This is good news for the folks that have decent resumes. It makes the good ones stand out.
You have NO idea. After about 4 in a row of bad references (by bad I mean the number didn't work to contact them, the person was no longer there, etc) I was ready to HIRE the person who had correct ones.
Note the original question, "Why is there so many lousy resumes?" Basic proper English doesn't come easily to everyone. No crime, but anyone with a cover letter or resume should have a second pair of eyes that really are tuned to proper English. I still take credit for a friend breaking into the film business because I re-did her ghastly resume and ordered her to take any job whatsoever in a film company- which she did- and now has her own documentary company.
brightdoglover, I have to agree with this. It's one thing to have a typo, (which, shouldn't happen on a resume or cover letter...check, recheck, read it backwards, check again), but some of the spelling and grammar is unbelievable.
I see people on forums and chat all the time saying, "Oh who cares! It's just a forum! What are you, the grammar police?!" Hey, maybe use your time on that forum to listen and tune up your grammar and spelling until it becomes habit. Then you won't have as many mistakes when you're trying to write a damn resume.
It DOES matter!
A large percentage of this population would not want me to be in HR. You don't know the difference between, "then" and "than"? Buh bye. You don't know the difference between, "to", "too", and "two"? Buh bye. "Their", "there", "where" "were", "your" "you're", on and on and on....I'd eliminate you just for that. If you can't take the time to learn simple fricken English that we were taught in GRADE SCHOOL, why on earth do you think I would hire you for a position in a company full of ADULTS?
Many decades ago I applied for a secretarial position. My application was on the desk of the hiring person. In bright red marker all the mistakes I had made on the application were circled for me to see. I was so embarrassed that from then on I checked and re-checked everything on applications and resumes.
I really can't tell you why I didn't do that before, I can just tell you that I was "shamed" into doing it after.
