Working in the Metro boxes also probably pays about the same (assuming your areas has them). For those types of jobs I find 'ism' usually strongly dictate hiring though. Regardless, it's usually highly competitive. Point is don't hold your breath once you apply...
The toll booth workers where I live look miserable. My state's lone toll highway has been issuing paper tickets out of a ticket dispenser for more than a decade. You turn in the ticket to a toll booth worker at your destination along with your money. I don't even need exact change, unlike some other states. But the turnpike authority has been pushing electronic accounts hard in the last few years, which would eliminate all the toll booth jobs.
They cut down on the number of toll booth workers in New Jersey because of EZ-Pass, etc, but I think that they will always have a few on the Turnpike and Parkway because of the booths devoted to people who don't have exact change.

An older guy I now work with in delivery told his stories of working for the PA/NJ toll authority,it actually didn't sound too bad,the salary was especially an incentive...though he did claim that you have to pretty much know someone to get in that union...
