My friend just moved out to Los Angeles and is trying to get a job in ABA therapy. I believe he has three years experience doing it and is working toward a bcba. He is two classes shy of finishing his bachelors but got the job through a friend before all the clinics started to hire only people with BAs.
Would it be hard to find a job having two classes shy from receiving a BA? Would his experience help him at all when looking for work?
ABA therapy is such a rare concept, and so few people are qualified to do this, and its very intensive so hard to hire people.
I would think your friend wouldn't have to worry about getting the degree because 3 years of work in this field would count for alot. Especially in LA, where alot of things are done differently, your friend should have a a great chance. Good luck.
By February he will have had 3 and half years experience. He says he still wants to finish online while working so he's taking his credits with him to LA. But this is good news, thanks PhxBarb! Are you in ABA therapy? It seems like the profession has such a high turnover that three and half years experience would seem like a lot.
Barcelona: I am not in ABA therapy but worked with those who were, and I managed services for autistic children, in AZ. The problem is you don't see alot of progress really fast, and its difficult for the professional to keep doing ABA without seeing definite progress with the child. It might be the reason for the high turnover. Not sure.
three years experience?? He should definitely be able to find an ABA job, maybe with one that might be less established, or with one organized by a regional center but three years is pretty valuable. And the high turnover rate may also be because this job is hard, period.
