Hello,

I work at my company for a long time. I know a lot of our clients: some of them - better, some of them - not so good.
Recently I checked out the website of one of our clients and noticed that they have a really great job opening. I know that I would be perfect fit for this position. And I was thinking to change my current job anyway.
I know this client pretty good but I can't tell you that we're friends.
What do you think if it's OK to ask the client about this position and let them know that I would like to apply? Or it's not a good idea because:
1. Of my company.
2. Of the client.
What do you recommend?

Thanks!

Check your employee handbook or employment agreement. At some companies, I could not work for a client unless 6 months after the end of employment.

I have known a few people that left to work for a client or vendor. They have easily made it into management. It's a great opportunity for more money and promotions.

Thanks so much for your reply!
I checked it and did't find anything about it.
So you think that I can let the client know that I'm going to apply?
Thanks!

To be on the safe side, approach it very cautiously. Unless you know for sure that the client doesn't personally know your manager/employer, I would first approach the client in very vague terms such as, "I noticed you have a job opening and wonder if you could tell me a little more about the position. I know someone who might fit the bill." If the client has any interaction at all with your boss, a direct application from you might negatively turn around on you even via a simple and unintentional slip of the tongue.

I would not talk to them ahead of time, simply apply like everyone else. Speaking to the client
appears like you are trying to take advantage of that business relationship which belongs to your current employer, not you. If and when when you get to the interview they recognize you and that helps you, fine. You also don't know how much loyalty the client has to your
boss, if they might tell them about you asking, while they are less likely to mention an application sent thjrough the normal channels.

I think you're right. And it would be honest to do this way.
Thank you!

I did it, that is how I found my current job. If you have a great relationship with the client, they probably would be THRILLED to have you. Go for it!

Actually, I once asked a client about job openings and was told about an unadvertised position. I ended up getting the job. It definitely helped that I already had a foot in the door.
