Nope not really -- technically they do not even consider it as a benefit you are still entitled to an hour lunch everyday including the day we get the free lunch...so if you have an errand to run after eating your lunch you can go do it and come back using your hour lunch.

It is a pretty relaxed amosphere around here so much so that it scares the heck out of me sometimes - there is no sort of being controlled on a leash its more like they just expect you to get your part of the work done when it has to be done kind of atmosphere -- more like being treated like a responsible adult instead of being treated like a little kid in kindergarten....if you come in late you either make up the time or use PV time -- you do not get written up or scolded.

We still get most benefits paid by the company (STD & LTD as well as Travel Insurance) only benefits we pay ourselves are medical and dental everything else the company covers...plus bonuses and raises are way above average.

Its also thought that by offering people free lunch, you diminish the chance that staff leave the premises and come back late. Kind of a benign control of sorts.

Still, ultimately harmless.

Sounds like a a good company. I was not saying it was an absolute. Only something I have head of here and there.

I work for a software company which provides free lunch to all employees once a week -- they send menus around and we all get to pick what we want for lunch.....does this happen anywhere else or just at my place.

I am curious to know because all the other places I used to work at never had this free lunch policy....and also what do you think about this free lunch policy?
Years ago when I worked in Sales & Marketing for Hilton Int'l properties - all employees received free lunch. They actually had a huge employee cafeteria with a full kitchen and chefs who prepared a large variety of hot fresh meals (5 course at that).

I worked for a small company ages ago that charged a nominal fee $5/week
and they had a cook come in and make supper size meals and homemade dessert w a drink. We all had lunch the same time.

Also a bank that had a reduced fee cafeteria.

A hospital that had a cheaper cafeteria and sometimes free lunch brought into our dept by medical lines salespeople (good food from nearby restaurants)

Last place was a Walmart that would cook up things on the grill, goodies and drinks for free every Friday. You served yourself on your lunch - people would load up their plates and grab 2nds and 3rds on breaks.

This benefit is cheaper for the firm in the long run. They appease you by giving you a meal. Believe me you the employee pay for this in some fashion. Wages must be kept lowered to offset the charges, unless the firm is having a stellar year. Watch the market and you will see cutbacks. There is nothing wrong with it. Most firm gives you free dinner for working late and car service home. Breakfast or lunch is reserved usually for special occasions. If you find your compensation is fair, don't fret enjoy the perks.

Company I work for pays our health insurance premiums 100%, and I would much rather have that than a free lunch. Course I just snack a little at lunch time anyway, so no biggie about the food as far as I'm concerned. We also have 100% match on our 401k. Excellent benefits, so nothing for me to fret about not getting a free lunch.

My employer has always provided a free lunch at least once a week, sometimes twice. No "boss to listen to" ~ it's just a perk of working in a successful corporate office in my case. And we take home leftovers if we want; or put them in the fridge for the next day. And it's not never fast food ~ it's catered in, usually by a great Mexican place that every loves. We have 57 employees, btw. And our health insurance is 100% paid for the employee. This isn't an offset of not paying good wages, either. I'm lucky.
