Besides getting free meals (3 daily) in the army i have never gotten a free lunch from any of my employers. It sounds like a nice perk unless you have to hear the boss talk during lunch.
My company does that once or twice a week; we pick what we want and it's a wrap on that. We had fre lunch yesterday, catered food from a hole in the wall BBQ joint and everyone was chopping it up. I'm all for it.
All of the posters with the lunches, etc. are very lucky. Here is the sum total of my food perks from 22 to 53.
1. On inservice days at a school the cafeteria was closed. We were too far away from any restaurant to leave, eat and come back in an hour. We had a group lunch that was paid for out of our flower and misc fund that we each contributed $12.00 to annually. A few teachers (I was one of them) planned the menu and cooked part of the food. We were permitted to leave an hour early since we did not technically have a "lunch" break.
2. For maintenance agreement meetings at Sears I got a free biscuit each week.
3. One company paid for lunch on your birthday at a nice restaurant. A few times the company paid for the women from three offices in the area to eat together. All of these offices were small and I guess it was supposed to foster "togetherness" or something like that.
4. I have received a 10% discount from restaurants near the workplace.
Many of the temporary assignments, etc. I've had the past few years would be happy if you didn't eat lunch, ask for a restroom break or have any other human needs during the day. I'm sorry that they couldn't use robots.
My grandfather was a union baker and the bakery owner let the workers take bread home but after a while the union business agent told the workers to stop taking the bread.
When the workers asked why the business agent replied that when the union went in to bargain for more wages the owner would reply "but I let them take bread".
Sounds like there are a lot of people who got way too excited about the Happy Meal mom would buy them while she dragged them around on errands when they were kids.
Yeah, once or twice a week we buy lunches for the employees and more often than not we'll send someone through the drive-through to get coffee for everyone. It's not any sort of contrived thing with us though and we are a very small company, and the work is highly physical.
My boss bought us lunch for 10 years until I was let go due to the economy. It was great and obviously rare. Now, my current job has a cafeteria with decent food selection. I usually buy soup and sald for an average of $3. Sometimes I'll buy one of their featured entrays for around $5.
