at $5 a gallon (which gas isn't yet) * 4 gallons a day = $20/day. $100/week and $400 per month. Add in another tank at $50 for random errands. Your math doesn't compute. Unless you're driving a huge gas guzzler. A civic will pull 30MPG all day.
I know right. Lol. I drive 62 miles roundtrip with a 2001 Mustang. I go through $200 a month tops. $400 tops for 2 cars. Of course if your in traffic for 2 hours a day that is different, but I spend almost 2 hours a day on the road and barely get over 23mpg in the Mustang. I believe the OP said he drives 62 miles also.
I do it now. Doesn't bother me. You just get used to it.
You can't definitively say that someone will "get used to" a long commute. That depends on the person. As I've said in other threads, I am not a morning person at all, and I honestly feel I have a sleep disorder. I have never "gotten used to" getting up early.
Some large SUV only get about 10 mpg. 40 miles each way, that's 8 gallons a day, 168 a month. That's about $700 some areas.
That's true. Then there are millions who even get a conservative 20ish mpg. 10mpg isn't the norm by any means. I rarely see a SUV that would qualify as 10 mpg.
I did 100 miles a day, 500 miles a week. 2 tanks of gas on a Honda @ around 45 bucks a tank...average of around 30 mpg, you're talking close to 100 bucks average depending on your gas prices and mpg. That's average 400-500 a month with in and around miles once in the city. 2K a month just commuting. Add weekend and more miles and gas.
Biggest part was no time to do things during the week the way I wanted. Tired all the time.

But if someone is doing that type of commute for any length of time, they like won't drive an SUV and then turn around and whine about how much they spend on gas.
The guy I mentioned in an earlier post who does a long commute every day buys small beater cars that he uses just for that purpose.
The job I have is 60 miles one way and it takes me about 70 minutes to drive it. I've been there for 2.5 years and let me tell you it got old FAST. If the job is as good as you say then it's worth it. Otherwise, if the job didn't pay as good, I'd look for somewhere else.
With my pickup it took about $30 per day just to drive to work and back. I got a motorcycle just to save on gas. The same commute now costs about $8.

I'm sure there are people who complain that gas went up to $5 and can no longer drive their 8mpg Hummer anymore. If something can be complained about....it will!
I drive a long distance and will be moving shortly. A tank of gas will last me a whole month after we move compared to barely lasting 5 days now. If we stayed, I would definitely get some crap car for the drive.
