Lol @ going home dead. Psh, if you're not in a combat MOS you don't have anything to worry about. 90% of the Marines/Army are in support roles (logistics, supply, finance, cook, etc). They don't see anything bad. If you're that frigging terrified just join the Navy, Air Force, or Coast Guard - how much combat do you think you see on a boat? It's easy money.
This is baloney. Living on a military boat bunked up with a bunch of dudes basically working 24/7 is no solution to low paying wages. This is like going to jail for the food and board.
I do not think the people in our military during war are saying "lol @ going home dead", and their families aren't either. What sources do you have for this crap?
I do not consider endless physical training easy and there is no swift guaranteed process to becoming an officer and making $100k. Even suggesting this is completely ridiculous. At best, it is no less difficult than making $100k as a CFO.
I'm telling you just join the military as an officer. It takes like 18 months to 2 years (depending on the needs of your battalion) to make Captain. Go to Afghanistan as a Captain in some pogue MOS - make $100,000 to sit on a FOB, hang out at the MWR, and occasionally do inventory. It's a shame the wars are winding down because a lot of blue collar folks - who would've never had that chance in the civilian world - are sitting on 6-figure bank accounts right now...
You have no clue what you are talking about. You don't just join and decide you are going to be an officer. You enlist, and you may have a sliver of an opportunity to go through officers candidacy school. And I don't know what you think the military pays, but here ya go...
They ain't getting rich, that's fore sure. Maybe after 8 or 9 years of service, you might be able to pull some great money, but if you don't make rank along the way, you get booted out. An awful lot of people who thought they were going to make a career in the services are finding themselves terminated early, and being denied pensions and other retirement benefits.
If it was as easy as you suggest, everyone would be doing it. Most are looking to get out after being exhausted by multiple tours of duties, time away from family, and money that covers the basics, and not necessarily much else.
"Working" today is not like leaving the cave to go slaughter an animal and bring the kill back home. There is no dignity in making minimum wage. If people stopped working these jobs they'd have to start paying more. Either Michelle Obama or Hillary will become president in 2016 so you e got at least 8 years of a free ride - take advantage, save your welfare money and put a down payment on a home in a few years.
I'm anything but some bed wetting liberal, but I'm tired of people who act like folks should just gleefully accept working at jobs that pay half of a living wage. "Pull yourself up" and all that stupid crap. This ain't the damn 1850s where anyone who was willing to take done risk and work really hard could go out West, get himself a few acres, and make his way and life through working the soil and using his wits...
There's NOTHING for some people. And since our type of world teaches (NEEDS to teach) dependence theres nothing they can do for themselves.
Just go on the dole. You deserve it
Yeah, I am seriously thinking about welfare because I could use the extra cash to move out of my dead end hometown with no jobs except minimum wage work. Dairy Queen is a major employer here and I am not kidding. The nearest city is Bloomington, IN and the major employer here pays $10.00 an hour. You can't find much that pays more than that. It is like all restaurant work here and that's about it.
Yeah, I am sick of people acting like you should happily accept minimum wage work. It seems to be coming mainly from rich Baby Boomers who say, "well I happily worked for $8.00 an hour in 1970, so you should be happy about it too." They don't get this pesky inflation thing.
I've been out of college for close to 8 years now (May will be the 8th anniversary of graduating college) and the highest wage I've had was making 14 dollars an hour. That job only required a pharmacy technician certification (which I have with my bachelors degree). You could have had a masters degree doing along with a pharmacy technician certification and you would still be making 14 dollars an hour. Excluding that job since it required a certification, then my highest paying job post college would be making 11.95 cents an hour and that job required a high school diploma and nothing more.
In the 8 years since I've graduated college, I've never had a job that required a college degree and never had a job that paid 30K to 35K starting off. I would gladly take a job that paid about 33K a year knowing that it could lead to something better.
I never believed I was entitled to a job that paid 50K. But every time I hear people scream college graduates shouldn't be entitled to a high paying job, I keep on thinking that could be something like a 33K a year job. 33K a year isn't a high paying job for most, but it's a start. Something I still haven't seen.
I would be thrilled with $14 an hour. BTW, I don't think I am entitled to a job where I make 50K either. I get sick of rich old people acting like you should just be poor while they are laughing all the way to the bank. It is like a portion of the population thinks you should eat scraps while they eat a steak. Since when did wanting enough to survive become "entitlement?" I would be happy with $26,000 a year. I don't really need a lot of money, I just need to make more than $1000 a month.
I don't care if I ever own an Ipad or a brand new car. I just want a decent apartment, one slightly used car, decent food, health care, and clothes on my back. Oh, and I would be totally happy shopping for clothes at Goodwill, Kohl's, JcPenney, or TJ Maxx. I don't need fancy designer clothes.

Just wondering three things:
1. How old are you?
2. Are you male or female?
The above two questions are important regarding the type of work.
I know what your going through op. I work part time for a city municipality. I receive zero benefits aside from a bus pass, which, by-the-way, is only usable to and from work. I too have attempted, and still am, trying to find a second part time job. But my current employer frowns upon moonlighting. And even if my current employer approved my second job, which is lined with red tape and favors, every other employer out there requires a completely open available schedule. Companies now days intentionally make it harder for people to make a living.
Actually, companies compete pretty fiercely for top talent. In actuality, they are very hard to find and we make it easy to make a living. It depends on the skills and talent that an employee has to offer.
There are deals for eye glass exams on groupon, living social and other deal sites. usually the exams are cheap like $40 or so. You can take the exam, get your prescription but dont buy glasses with them and other cheap glasses online for like $10.
I dont think the OP is asking for much. He doesnt sound entitled to me at all.
I have honestly reached the point where I feel that I would be be better off on welfare or in jail. I make about $1000 a month and can't make it anymore. I can't afford health care or the glasses I need and have maybe $2.00 left in my bank account. I am trying to find a second job, but everyone is looking to work a second job in my area because my area is a minimum wage hell hole so finding a second job has been difficult.
I am just wondering if anyone out there has made it out of minimum wage work and into the middle class within the past 4 years or so. I am wondering if there is any hope anymore because honestly I would rather be dead than continue to live like this.
Oh, I don't have cable and use free Internet. I do have a car because it is my only way to get to work because there is no public transportation in my area. I have pretty much cut everything remotely enjoyable out of my budget. So don't give me the living beyond my means bull **** and I should just love living without healthcare and the glasses I need. Yes, I am driving without glasses and do struggle to see signs.
One can raise out of minimum wage with work, will and effort. You don't say what skills you have? What jobs you do? I have come to the conclusion that most people don't shoot high enough with their expectations and many aren't willing to put in the effort.
Go back to college.. get into the healthcare field. If you live below your means after graduation your loan debt will get paid off quicker. Spruce up your resume to get a higher paying job. re-loacate. I know jobs that are high paying jobs, but are very demanding of your time. Are you willing to work 3 weeks straight to have 2 off? Are you willing to work 18 hour days at times to make 6 figures (with barely a GED). Are you willing to do some heavy manual labor?
If you want to live in a higher socio-econimc bracket you will be giving up your time to work long hours, your time off to be on call, your time for continuous education in your field to stay competitive, etc..
Do you want to go on welfare and be a welfare slug the rest of your life? And welfare does NOT pay that much per month.. there are stipulations.
Maybe look at becoming a real estate agent.. you have to work hard, long hours, weekends, etc.. but you can make a decent living. What about becoming an financial consult - again a good living, but constantly on call with your clients - even while on vacation.
