One of them was fired from my current job and the other was a lady who was fired from the job I had right before this one.

Out of curiosity I decided to check them out on Google, and both of them have made a go at starting their own businesses. One of them has started a cake shop and the other is now an interior decorator.

I find it interesting that after getting fired, neither of them a.) stayed in the accounting field or b.) continued working for others.

Sometimes, I think getting fired is the catalyst that wakes people and makes them think "what the hell am I doing with my life?" It's probably the best thing that has happened to those two women, careerwise at least.

Hard to let go of a steady paycheck. Maybe these were hobbies or occasional jobs that allowed them to develop the clientele. Could be they used the severance and/or cashed out retirement for startup costs

If we only went by odds there would be no Google, FB, Samsung,HP, Walmart. Sometimes its worth it to go against the norm.

Maybe you won't be the next great bakery making 500k a year, but if your happy and making 50k a year that is worth it to them.

Chances are though they won't be making 50K a year. They will be out of business. Of course they could also make it big. Just saying it isn't easy and many fail.

Good for them for pursuing something that is probably more meaningful to them than accounting.

I got fired from a job last year- at first I thought my life was over. I took time off to regroup and worked closely with a retired recruiter and this year I'm working for a better company, a boss who loves me, an environment that is fabulous, etc. I've been asked if I'd return to my former field and I just LAUGH.

I should thank the girl who went out of her way to get me fired

My very first job out of college was working for a one man company. I once told him that I read only 1 out of 4 businesses make it from start up. He came back with, of the ones that do make it, three out of four of them are on their third try.

Well, at least they are trying. It's better than sitting around with a "woe is me" attitude complaining about not having a job and thinking they'll never make it doing what they love.

AT LEAST THEY TRIED!

Failing is not the worst thing that can happen.....

Nothing good comes easy, and having a defeatist attitude almost ensures failure.

Well I am certainly not going to encourage anyone to start their own business who gets fired because it wouldn't make sense. Actually that is a decision I feel someone has to make on their own because of all risk that's involved. No one should ever offer that kind of advice to anyone.
