Maybe he had no choice? Almost all interviews will conflict with work hours if you work regular hours. You pretty much have to take a vacation day or sick day to interview. Why are you always against the employee's side, geez man.
OP, just say you were riding your bike into work, but got a flat tire and had to walk it back b/c it was too crowded for your bike to fit on the train. In my city, you actually can't take bikes on the train during rush hour so if your city is like that, perfect! Also works well with the weather getting warmer too. This excuse is a winner, trust me
How is it against the employee to state that it is wrong for him to lie? If an employer was lying to an employee, you all would be up in arms. But, expecting the employee to be honest?
With any luck, the prospective employer will also wonder how you are able to get time off during the work day....
Tell them you were a witness to a hit and run and had to stay around and wait for the police. THEN..the police took forever to take your testimony which resulted in you being late for work.
make sure you tell them it was not a serious accident because the person who was hit were not taken to hospital. This way it wont be in the paper for them to verify.
Oversleep to the point where you miss work? If I overslept I'd probably skip cooking breakfast (just grab something), skip exercising, skip the news, skip reading, skip errands, etc. and make sure I get to work on time. There's so many things that can be adjusted in the morning to accommodate sleeping in that makes it an unrealistic excuse to be late to work. The same with traffic.
I think the best way to handle a morning interview is to just use some PTO.

Agreed. It kind of sucks having to take PTO off for it, but at least you won't get caught in a lie!
Or not schedule an interview that conflicts with work hours.
Almost all interviews are going to be during work hours.
