i'm not saying the process is perfect or actually selects the best applicants. but it's not true that it's not possible to get a job through an online application. that's just silly.

I think if everyone choose to do this instead of wasting their time at the internet black hole, some people may actually get hired for once.
I cannot think of a worse way to 'make an impression' on the manager. It won't be the kind of impression that will land you a job. Interrupting the manager is not the way to go.
Not to mention if everyone who filled out an application did that, the poor manager would never get any work done.

Best bet, dress nicely, go to the store and mention that you have put in an application, ask customer service or an assistant mgr/supervisor if they are currently hiring at that location. Make a good impression on that person, and if they are hiring you have a better shot at getting your name in front of the hiring manager.
On more than one occasion I've nudged my boss to look for a particular applicant if they have come in and seemed like someone who would be a good fit. Of course timing is everything, this only works when we actually have openings. (Lately it seems like we never have any, we just let people go and don't replace them.)

I usually do that after I apply. Or I'd call. So far neither have given me any results but your husband could give it a try. He might have better luck than me.

Wow. No wonder I haven't been getting many interviews. I've been told to call the next day or a few days after.

It is very interesting how this is a hit or miss. Seems a lot of people think common knowledge is to call or show up to push an application through, but I guess that wasn't the case. It still could go either way. I've worked for places where hiring managers are more than glad to have someone who is qualified show up even with online apps, because it shows initiative and going above and beyond. Plus, it saves on resume sifting. I've also had people show up trying to apply for a position when we have none, but still, no harm, no foul.

the problem is, for every manager like you who likes in person applicants, there are a whole lot who are annoyed by them. especially if the applicant has already been told to apply online.

It's the numbers. We are still getting over 100 applicants through the website, as a hiring manager I have to go through them all to determine which meet the minimum requirements which is time consuming. This is in addition to my regular work managing my staff which would be operating with one less person, so an applicant calling or coming in is not just annoying, but wastes time.
