I work for one of the major banks in NC. I find the atmosphere to be stuffy, very corporate, and stiff. It's like the people on my floor as well as my building live and breathe their job. Just wondering if its just the city and state where I reside that the atmosphere is like this or is it better persay in some larger "happening" city? Or should I expect this kind of atmosphere in banking.

There are corporate environments and cultures in lots of cities that are very rigid, Performance can be judged on the slightest thing and many places require long hours and self-sacrifice. However, This may just be in the workplace where some are stuffy and uptight. There are people like this who are way different behind closed doors. Jobs like this are stressful and they may be very outgoing or enjoy fun outside of work. They need to maintain an image, 40 + hours a week and this is not easy for years and years.

There are places like that everywhere.

Go with the flow. I work in a place like that and I proudly walk around with a smile on my face as opposed to a lot of folks who look catatonic, depressed, or miserable.

It's the company. Every culture is different. That is one of the questions I always ask when searching for a job, I ask about the culture. If you don't like the culture, you won't be successful. I would start looking for a new job, with a culture that matches your personality.

this. unfortunately asking about culture doesn't always get a useful answer, but it's still worth asking. it's also important to observe what you can while you are in the office.

but yeah, i doubt it has anything to do with the location. there are industries that are stuffier and less stuffy on the whole, but it still ultimately comes down to the individual workplace.
