company always on tight budget due to decreasing donations.

It sounds very much like what I had before I took the plunge and went part time. I was 62, could not stand the job and decided to take my SS and just work at the job 20 hours a week. Of course I still got medical benefits with 20 hours a week. But, being bored, spending day after day on the web, killing time, watching the clock, isn't good for the soul. It can weigh on you and you won't be a happy person. If you can do this job part time, do it. Not being at a boring job 5 days a week helps ALOT. Because I was there only 20 hours a week, I looked forward (sorta) to going back to work after being off. And I didn't have a working spouse, but just couldn't do it anymore. Look at all your options. Just because you are 62, doesn't mean you are stuck in something that saps your energy. I say get out of there !!!

I don't if this company would allow me to work part time or if I would get benefits at 20 hrs a week.
My wifes medical is extremely outrageous expensive. I might stick it out a yr. or 2 more as I will be closer to medicare. Since I am accountant I might be able to work pt. as a bookleper closet to my house to avoid high transporation costs

While it may be below what you think you are worth, 46k is more than most Americans make. I think a 62 year old who is making your money and is not being forced out should consider himself blessed.

I recommend that you start picking up some accounting related work that you can do out of your home. This would increase your income and be a good measure if you can do more should you decided to resign.

Remember the new ACA act will provide you and your wife options later this year. Keep an eye on the posted rates. It may be that your employer charges a couple the same rate as family which ramps up the cost of health insurance for a couple (OPM does that). If you switch to an individual policy under ACA, your wife dropping you from her employer policy, your family income may qualify you for premium support while health insurance via your wife's employer drops substantially.

I don't recommend starting SS at 62 unless you know you are likely to die early. visit the www.early-retirement.org forums. Lots of non-political conversations about ACA, thread on SS, by a lot of very smart people.

Remember that even non-profits need audits. You could explore working for your local accounting firm who does those audits. Here your years of experience may be valued.

If medical is costing a lot now, wait to see what it will be if you retire before being eligible for medicare. Being on a spouse's plan may not work, I know many employers are talking about eliminating that benefit, and charging the full amount for covering a spouse when the Obama plan kicks in fully.
