I would stop lying if I were you. Even if you aren't caught today (which you very well might be) getting in the habit of lying to get what you want isn't exactly something to be proud of.
And it is 100% legal to discriminate based on age if you are under 40 years old.

I don't see the point in lying about something as insignificant as 3 years.
I think the lesson is probably going to be learned from this interview so the OP can just suck it up and move forward not doing that again. "Personal", that's funny! It used to be that they could ask anything and then, that stopped but with the internet employers and everyone else has all the information they want with the click of a key. I don't think the previous salary makes that much difference unless, in someone's case I know of, they left a job that had paid 3 times what the current job they were applying for was going to pay, red flag major and worth investigating! If I were the OP, I just would not over think this and move on considering this, perhaps, a lesson learned. Seriously, it may take a few interviews to land a job so this was the "practice" one.
