Do what I did. Go to Microsoft.com's Learning page (if you can't find the link, Google "Microsoft learning") and you can purchase some labs for as cheap as $14.99 without sales tax. You can get certified in Microsoft Office, 7, or 8 as well as others, then transfer those skills once you finally land a position or to help you land one.
I would say look at free learning options. I rather go through free options than spend money because I rather have the money for food, drink and gas.
A lot of people say to blog about something you enjoy. (On here someone said to do youtube videos on gaming.) This is good but be aware, sometimes people may look down on this based on what you blog about.
