I had a job interview yesterday and I think it went well.

I have a vacation planned in a couple weeks and I did not mention that during the interview. Should I have said something? I'm not sure when the position starts because she didn't say and I forgot to ask but I'm thinking it wasn't right away because I'd still need a background check which takes some time.

Now if I were to get a phone call offering me the position should mention it during the phone call or wait until I go in to fill out paperwork? Obviously if the position doesn't start until after my trip then it doesn't matter but since I don't know I want to be prepared with what to say.

Originally I wasn't planning on applying to jobs until after the trip but when I saw the posting for this job I was excited about it so I applied anyway.

I think you did well not mentioning the vacation in the interview. However, if they offer you the job and want you to start immediately (i.e., before your vacation is planned to end), you may have to choose between accepting the job and taking your vacation.

It depends a lot on the employer's needs. If they are trying to fill the position ASAP because they need someone in that role right now, they are not going to want to wait while you do whatever you have planned. If, however, they can be flexible and move your start date out a little, then it may all work out for you.

Wait until you have an offer, then work on negotiating your start date. Let them know that you will not be available until a certain date. I would personally refer to it as prior plans instead of a vacation, since that may conjure images of you sitting on a beach drinking an adult beverage. Granted, that may be exactly what you are planning but it may not sit well with the hiring manager who is riding a desk all week trying to figure out how she's going to get all the work done while short one person.

Best of luck to you.

what av8n said, basically. the proper time to discuss an existing vacation is after an offer has been made but before you accept it. it's part of the negotiations, just like salary, etc. the vacation's so close that it will really just be a matter of negotiating start date. you were right to leave it out of the interview.

i don't know that it matters if you call it a vacation or not, but there's no harm in being conservative and referring to it as travel plans. just make sure they know that things are already booked.

it's distinctly possible that the decision-making and hiring process will extend past your vacation time anyway. at worst it might delay your start date by a week, which generally isn't a big deal. i'm guessing things will work out fine if you get the job. good luck!

Haha! Yes, I was going to say that I was going to be out of town for a few days.

Thanks
