As long as they aren't trying to get free overtime from you by declaring you a supervisor there are no laws limiting it. Exceptions include railroaders, who are required to have 8 hours of rest after 16 of work.

It's legal but the attitude towards OT depends on the company. My company won't allow anything other than 40 hrs unless the "big shots" are going to show up so they want everything done.

not certain it is legal but it can be a sticky situation; in any case you have to consider if it is "expected" by management there may be consequences.... legal or not.
I would wait until asked... don't borrow trouble.
Does management know about your situation? management may be sympathetic and accommodate you IF it is within his/her power... but I would not count on it; I would check into FLMA (family leave medical act) as it may offer you some remedy.

Yes it is legal if they pay you. I also worked for a large company and it was called required for the needs
of the business. However we had a union so only were required to do 15 hours some months and ten
hrs in other months. Pretty much we could work when we did want to as long as we did the ot.

Companies absolutely CAN require that you work OT. Especially in your case as you get paid for it, there is not going to be a lot of sympathy. While it is possible that you are not able to meet the obligations, you need to think long and hard about what the job hunt will be like without UI (going to be a HARD road to get UI if you are fired for not working the hours the company requires) and with having to explain to a prospective employer that you were terminated for failing to work the hours the company needed you to work. Hiring managers just love the idea of hiring someone who was fired for not doing the work the company needed. Oh wait, they don't.

Depending on state and job classification per FLSA, it is also quite possibly legal if they don't pay you.
