I work in education as a teacher, and if you are terminated effective immediately you have done something seriously wrong. I've seen it happen three times - one left on a stretcher after a "break from reality, " another was escorted from the building by the police, and the third just "disappeared" - he was in his office on Friday afternoon, and on Monday morning his office was completely bare, and nobody was talking.

What's worse? I suppose being told in April that your contract (which expires in June) will not be renewed for the next year. You have to twist in the wind for about 6 weeks until the end of the school year. Resigning immediately in my state can get you docked a month's pay by law for breaking your contract. The only upside is that you get paid and your benefits through August.

At my company they take our team into a fake "meeting" and escort the person out/pack their desk while everyone else is away. I guess to minimize any embarassment.

It is normal though it sucks. I was fired once years ago and was surprised that this happened, but quickly learned that it is standard practice many places.

I work at a major hospital's boiler room. Have only seen one guy get fired and he was watched as he cleaned out his locker because he was accused of theft. Had they had enough proof, he would have been escorted out in handcuffs. Don't know how they handle firing among the floor medical staff who have access to narcotic medication. They try to be discreet with firing unless the police are involved. There's no back way secret exit from the hospital.

This is why I don't keep any personal effects at my desk save a few magazines to read at lunch, some silverware/tupperware, etc....

I've heard of people being forced to leave w/o even returning to their desk. That is a bit harsh. I keep my phone/keys/wallet in my desk. I'm also a notary and my suppies are in my workstation. You better call the cops if you think I'm going to allow someone to escort me out of the building w/o those items! Someone is gonna go to jail or the hospital!

LOL, that's exactly what's happening to me tomorrow. It will be my last day at this job. I will not be allowed to go back to my desk after the exit meeting & they will be walking me out of the building. I do get paid for the entire day, however.

I know I work for ultimately a data company but sheesh

I was walked out twice. The first time they laid me off and the second time, after they brought me back and then decided to lay me off again.

I witnessed my buddy get fired a few months back. He was walked out by the Regional Manager (our managers work in another state). He had tears in his eyes, I felt so bad for him.

Yeah, but I took a stance when they brought me back. I had a sit down with this manager that came in to turn things around at this struggling automotive/aerospace supplier. I asked him about the stability of my job. I was in college after all and had bills to pay. Shortly after, maybe a week later, they let me go for the second time. I guess he answered my question.
