Like if sign a consent form which states a background will be performed ..is that giving consent for a pre-employment screening? I mean I use to think a background check deals solely with criminal records and such. But after searching the web it seems as if it's more to it than your criminal history. The paper asked if I was able to work in the U.S and if I had ever been convicted. Then it asked for my signature ..I really should have read the whole thing.

I don't know technically if they are the same but to me it reads as though background checks are a subset of pre-employment screening (???).

Caveat: Getting employed for with job with a security clearance is a little different. For example, if the job requires a secret clearance, you will be hired even though you haven't received your final secret - only an interim secret clearance - however the interim secret clearance was granted due to some pre-employment screening with the assumption you would be expected to receive your final secret clearance.

They are the same. They usually screen for the following:

1/ Criminal convictions
2/ Previous jobs held & companies worked for
3/ Education verification
4/ Previous addresses/residences
5/ Driving record

Added one more. It was explained to hubby that they check the credit report for extensive short term/gambling debts. (ETA For jobs that does not handle money/in financial fields etc)

Thanks, you are correct.

It's still early here in CA!

That already is in place for medical field jobs....

I think it should stop at criminal and jobs screening.

I just look for felonies and heavy drug use (cocaine and up). A guy that stole a coke at 15 years old and smokes a naturally occurring bush doesn't really bother me.

But, I'm in CA so we're a little lax.

My guess is the financials go back 7 years.

Criminal stuff is probably from the age of 18 forward.

Driving? Who knows, I'd imagine since you earned the license.

Addresses would probably be 5 years.

Job history would be a complete scan most likely.
