Has not yet returned to the office. He now has a family issue he has to take care of. I have asked for documentation when he comes back in but its clear that he has been tipped off and is buying time.
Government jobs - man, they can be tough to handle from a management perspective. If you're lucky, you'll see a resignation come across as soon as his PTO is used up with the miraculous "issues". If you're unlucky, four letters to fear - FMLA.
No matter how badly someone screws up in their job, you couldn't pay me enough to fire someone in this day and age! I'm one of these worry-wart, worst-case-scenario types! You fire someone today, it's can be the equivalent of killing that person!
I'd live under a state of paranoia for months and years afterwards if I did something like that!
I'd be looking under my car everyday I left the office, thinking a bomb was planted there. Even at home I'd even be afraid to keep the curtains open! But that's me! Crazy as a hoot owl when it comes to things like that!
Someone got fired in an establishment next to where I work, the fired employee came back one night and poured a gallon of paint over the car of the one who did the firing and flattened all 4 tires!

Uh oh. Me, too.
I agree that firing someone today could be detrimental - to the employee, to the boss, coworkers, etc.
People need their jobs, and to have some jerk snatch it away from them, one almost couldn't blame the employee for taking revenge. But revenge isn't worth the consequences. Another job will come (one day), but prison is a whole 'nother matter.

Quoted for truth.
Had an employee with attendance problems, they ended up getting fmla because of dental issues.
You have a real big problem when everyone starts to go to the same doctor.

Some people deserve to be fired. People who harrass coworkers are right up there. You are doing everybody else in the office a favor when you fix this issue by firing somebody.
I think that the issue of personal safety is overblown. Crime rates have actually fallen over the past 30 years, not increased. We just hear about it more. The chances of a fired employee coming back for vengeance are very, very, very tiny. Plus, anybody inclined to actually do that is a danger just being in the workplace, so you are probably increasing your safety be firing the person.

Worst-case, worry-wart type here doesn't want to hear it: very, very tiny chance!
Yes, I agree, there are any number of employees who should be fired, like those who spend too much time on their Ipads at work, but don't ask me to get rid of them!

For those facing homelessness, after losing a job, the idea of prison might very well be a comforting idea to many of them! It's like this: I have nothing left to lose!
