Unfortunately, the way it always was... qualified people often don't get jobs over less qualified ones. Having to get through the interview and finding the jobs are also part of the job every bit how being successful in school is about how to find your classrooms and learning to use computers for email and such even though that won't be your field.
I'd be more selective about the types of networking too, such as don't go to career fairs that are too far away, or have very unsuitable companies.
Maybe I'm misinterpreting this guy's message but his salient points seems to be:
- Networking work for many people
- Networking doesn't work for many other people
- Networking doesn't work if you lack polished socialization skills
- If you find networking doesn't work for you, you're better off doing something more worthwhile
In my industry and many others, lots of mediocre people have flourished because they have built a Network of industry friends who help them with leads and act as references. Very much like a good old boys network in many ways. Call it what you want, it often works. FYI, there are good old girls networks out there as well.
Having 1,000 LinkedIn or Facebook friends means nothing. Going to lame networking groups and meetings is often a waste of time.
Regardless of your degree of social acclimation, building a network of friends and current and ex co-workers is the best way to build your career and secure jobs. Maintaining those relationships over time and not just when you need help is important as well.
*If someone is incompetent or has a bad work reputation, all of the networking in the world may not help.

I love career/life coaches!
But surely you have to admit that some people need even the simplest logic stapled to their brains in order to comprehend it. In no area of life are there "one size fits all" solutions.
