any lifestyle changes once you hit $200K are is it all pretty normal after a while. one of my earliest goals was hitting the $100K mark, i got to it in when i was single and in my late 20s. it was rather uneventful... i'll be approaching the $200K mark as a salaried employee sometime next year and i'm looking forward to it. i think i'll be able to start raising a family at that point.
i realize, raising kids in the $100K would be rather difficult. $100K+ only allows me to support myself and my wife comfortably; we reside in washington, dc. wife doesn't work, we have no debts; i could afford a new car, but really even at $100K a new car really isn't affordable. most of my income is on rent, food and some modest travel.
For the most part, my life remained the same. The only thing that really changed was the clubs that I go to. Salary had been only a portion of my salary for quite some time prior to hitting the $200k mark. So it wasn't a big change for me really.
Congratulations. Unless they have lived and worked in Washington, D.C. most people would not understand how it's difficult to love off of $100K a year there.
Ha, 200K, I'll never see that. I will say, my lifestyle did not change as my income grew. I still don't have cable television, I still drive the same vehicle I drove in HS (bought new at the time), I still cook most of my meals at home and my diet has not changed. The things that are most important to me really can't be bought. My health is exceptional, and my doctors always ask what kind of foods I consume because my lab work is always perfect. My job is enjoyable and keeps the mind engaged. I have energy enough to exercise 3-4X a week. Outside of that, whenever I truly want something, I have money enough to buy it. Basically, I'm quite satisfied with what I have, and thankful for that.
What is your job title and industry. I'm amazed people can even get paid that much from a company. You must be a partner or in senior level management or something.
manhattan, NYC
trendy parts of LA
parts of the bay area (silicon valley)
etc
in all of the above places, 100K for a SINGLE guy is just middle class. a family of 4 would surely struggle on that income in these areas.
If I made another 50k towards year it would all go towards debt and savings.
I couldn't imagine the difference in those places. Ive even noticed a big difference going from Houston to Alabama. I'll make around 150k this year at 25 but living expenses are dirt cheap. My rent/utilities is about 900/mo and I pay no state income tax. I also pay no tax on about 40k of my income that is per diem and my truck allowance. After all bills are paid and food/entertainment is paid for I have around 3500 left over each month if nothing major comes up.
That being said, I still wont plan on starting a family until I'm debt free and can put 20% down on the house I want. I'd guess that'll be about 4-6 years.
